Swedish prime minister announces split from wife

STOCKHOLM (AP) -- Sweden's prime minister and his wife have separated after two decades of marriage.

Fredrik Reinfeldt's office announced the split in a brief statement Wednesday.

The 46-year-old Reinfeldt leads the conservative Moderate Party and has been prime minister of a center-right coalition government since 2006. His 44-year-old wife Filippa is a local politician for the Moderates in Stockholm county. The couple married in 1992 and has three children.

The announcement caught Swedish media by surprise. Earlier this week, newspapers reported that the couple had bought a new home in Taby, outside Stockholm.

It wasn't immediately clear whether the couple was also planning to divorce.
