Ecuadorean judge in Chevron case dismissed

QUITO, Ecuador (AP) -- The judge who ruled against Chevron Corp. in an $18 billion environmental damage case has been dismissed for improperly freeing an alleged drug trafficker.

A resolution by Ecuador's Board of Judges obtained by The Associated Press says Nicolas Zambrano and another judge were either negligent or deceitful in not ordering preventive detention in October 2009 for a suspect caught with a half ton of cocaine.

The AP got the internal document from a court official who asked not to be further identified for fear of losing his job. Dated Feb. 29, it recommends criminal investigation of Zambrano and the other judge.

Zambrano could not immediately be located for comment.

The secretary at the provincial court where he works said he was on vacation.
