Thyra J. Kroner, age 101, of Stevens Point, died March 1, 2012 at St Michaels Hospital, Stevens Point while under the care of Ministry Home Care Hospice.

Thyra was born October 29, 1910 to the late Carl & Karin (Sorensen) Bentzen in Froslev, Denmark. She grew up there and attended Store Heddinge High School. She attended nursing school at Bispebjerg Hospital in Copenhagen, Denmark. In 1931, before graduating, she spent a year in the US. She lived in Chicago, IL and worked as an au pair girl before returning to nursing school. Thyra graduated as a nurse in 1934 in Copenhagen, Denmark.

Thyra worked in Denmark as a nurse from 1934 to 1938. She then moved to Paris, France and worked in the American Hospital. While there, she met Peter Kroner, a German doctoral student majoring in comparative literature.

She married Dr. Peter Albert Kroner on December 21, 1938 in Copenhagen, Denmark. He preceded her in death in 1999.

From 1939 to 1946 Thyra and Peter moved to Erlangen, Germany; during WWII. Thyra worked as a part time nurse. While there they started a family. Her son Klaus was born in 1942 and son Sven was born in 1946.

In 1954 her family immigrated to the United States and settled in Stevens Point. Thyra worked for St. Michaels Hospital in the emergency room and as a surgical nurse. She retired in June of 1975.

Thyra will be remembered for her Danish hospitality and loving nature. She enjoyed the company of others and catering to their needs. Thyra was an excellent homemaker- she loved to cook, bake, knit, and garden. Thyra loved spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren.

Survivors include sons, Klaus (Mary) Kroner of Stevens Point & Sven (Dorothy) Kroner of Madison; and grandchildren, Stee Kroner of Stevens Point, Nikki (Charisse) Kroner of Wauwatosa, Eric Kroner of Madison, & Scott Kroner of Long Beach, CA.

She is preceded in death by her Parents; husband, Peter; siblings, Gurli, Harald, & Johannes; and grandson, Jason.

A Funeral Service celebrating her life will be held 12:00 noon, Saturday, March 10, 2012 at Trinity Lutheran Church, Stevens Point, with Rev. Steven Olson officiating. Visitation will also be held on Saturday from 11:00 am until time of service at the church. Burial will be held in Our Savior Lutheran Cemetery, Iola.
