The city of Wausau has received hundreds of thousands of dollars to help pay for equipment upgrades to its wastewater treatment plant.
The upgrade has already taken place. City leaders say the $241,000 grant from Focus on Energy will help the city pay for it.
Leaders say the equipment at the plant was old and inefficient. They also say the upgrade will benefit city residents.
"By helping offset some of the costs with this money, it just helps keep the rates lower for our customers out there," said Brad Marquardt, director of Wausau Public Works and Utilities.
The entire upgrade cost almost $1.5 million, but Wausau city leaders estimate the new equipment will save $180,000 a year. They say that should take six to eight years to pay off.
