Wausau home to U.S. ice fishing team tryouts

WAUSAU (WAOW) --  For Myron Gilbert, fishing is his life.

"I've been around the world fishing, places I've never dreamed," Gilbert said.

He is a two-time national ice fisherman, winning a gold medal in 2010. And this year, he's hoping for one more.

"After you stand on that podium and the national anthem is playing, tears stream down your face. I don't need to explain no more," Gilbert says as he reflects on that winning day.

Gilbert is one of fifty anglers from around the country trying out for the U.S. ice fishing team. This year tryouts take place in the Wausau area. Anyone is welcome to compete, but only the top ten make the team.

"The finals here this weekend is to get a good team and win a gold medal," Brian Gaber, U.S. Ice Team head coach said.

But why Wausau? The tryouts have taken place all over the world including Ukraine and Kazakhstan.

"It's the community. Everyone here has been so nice and supportive," Gaber said.

The group also got a little help from The Sports Authority, a group designed to bring sporting events to the area. They gave the group a $3,000 grant to help make Wausau the host.

"What this event foes is allow the greater Wausau area to be showcased as a destination for ice fishing," Darien Schaefer, Executive Director of the Wausau Visitors and Convention Bureau said.

And he hopes this is just the beginning.

"If we move on to the next step and become the national or the world championship site then we see people coming to fish throughout the year," Schaefer said.

But for Gilbert, it doesn't matter if he's in Ukraine or Wisconsin. All he needs is his fishing pole and some ice.

"I am going to fish my hind off, go as fast as I can and hope for the best," Gilbert says with a smile.
