WAUSAU (WAOW) -- It's a night of Hollywood glitz and glam.
"Go into your closet, get weird, and have fun," Hooray for Hollywood MC, Dave Kallaway said hours before the event started.
Don't worry, it's all for a good cause.
"We have a lot of victims of domestic violence and sexual abuse, and not a lot of people realize that," Executive Director of the Women's Community Jane Graham Jennings said.
The Women's Community is a shelter for domestic abuse victims. The charity serves thousands every year. Leaders say it is events like Hooray for Hollywood, that keep the program afloat.
"The money helps us make sure victims have a place to go when they need it to feel safe. It makes sure that they have somewhere to go to talk when they need help," Graham Jennings said.
But this year is special. The Women's Community broke ground on a new building a few months ago. Friday's event hopes to raise enough money for programming and operations.
"It says to victims this community cares about you," Graham Jennings explains. "It says we built this place for you so you know you are worthy and valued."
That's why Anita Speering volunteers her time. For her, it is a way to give back to the community where she grew up.
"It's so scary when you see what happens with domestic violence. It is wonderful to see people coming together and being able to do something for the good of the community," Speering explains.
Leaders say, in the past, this event has brought in close to $5,000. This year, they are hoping for a good outcome.
"Our goal is $4,500. We have anywhere from 250-300 people coming so that goal is feasible," Graham Jennings explains.
Hundreds of people means hundreds of crazy costumes. So, grab your designer duds and Hooray for Hollywood.
The event begins at 5 p.m. at the Jefferson Street Inn in downtown Wausau. Tickets are still available.
Cool and bright Wednesday. Light snow likely Thursday night. A storm may hit Saturday.
