Clinton: US still committed to Afghanistan

UNITED NATIONS (AP) -- Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton says the alleged shooting of Afghan villagers by an Army soldier does not change the nation's "steadfast commitment to protecting the Afghan people."

Speaking after a U.N. Security Council meeting, Clinton called the attack "inexplicable." She told reporters "this is not who we are" and that the U.S. would make sure that any perpetrators would be held accountable.

The soldier, an Army staff sergeant, allegedly killed more than a dozen Afghans, including nine children, in Afghan's southern Kandahar province. The attacks come at a time of increased tension in the region after Muslim holy books were burned at a U.S. air base, sparking widespread protests and the assassination of two service members.
