Selection criteria

The selection criteria for the national and local Jefferson Awards winners are parallel.

There are two basic considerations:

  • Outstanding Personal Acts
  • Community Impact

First, the selectors review acts of courage, vision, dedication, and tenacity. Is there anything outstanding, unique, heroic about the nominee and his or her character?

Second, they review the impact on the community. Public service is about serving people and communities. As the nominee addresses important issues facing local communities or the country, has the nominee had a measurable impact?

Jefferson Awards highlight the "Unsung Heroes." Eligibility includes volunteers as well as paid professionals who go well above and beyond their expected service. "Unsung" means not normally in the media.

How Jefferson Award winners are chosen

Each month, Newsline 9 features a local Jefferson award winner. This person's self-less acts have made a huge impact in our community. You can nominate someone for a local Jefferson Award by clicking here and filling out the form.

Each year, Newsline 9 and the Marshfield Clinic hold a banquette to recognize all the local Jefferson Award winners. The banquette is held in November at the Great Dane Pub in Wausau. At this banquette, a panel of judges honors one of the local Jefferson Award winners as the overall local winner for the year. That person will then travel to Washington D.C. in June to represent our area at the National Jefferson Awards Ceremony where a national winner is chosen.
