Rare trial in Haiti sentences UN Pakistani troops

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti (AP) -- A United Nations spokeswoman in Haiti says two Pakistani peacekeepers were sentenced to one year in prison in a rare trial.

Sylvie Van Den Wildenberg says the two troops were found guilty in a Pakistani-run military trial held for their role in the abuse case of a 14-year-old boy.

Authorities from the United Nations and the Haitian government were notified about the trial last week by an official from Pakistan.

The abuse allegations come just months after six Uruguayan troops with the U.N. mission in Haiti were accused of raping a young Haitian man. That case was referred to the Uruguayan judicial system.

Van Den Wildenberg said Tuesday the military trial was held in the port city of Gonaives without U.N. personnel or Haitian officials present.
