Santorum looks for additional wins

Posted:

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) -- Rick Santorum says if he can keep pulling off victories like the ones yesterday in Alabama and Mississippi, eventually people will conclude that Mitt Romney "is not going to be the nominee."

He spoke to reporters today in Puerto Rico, where he's spending two days campaigning for Sunday's primary in the U.S. territory. He had just met with the territory's governor -- a friend from when they were both in Washington. The governor has endorsed Romney.

Santorum's wins yesterday effectively shut the door on Newt Gingrich's strategy of reviving his campaign in the South. Santorum wouldn't say it's time for Gingrich to leave the race. But his advisers have made it clear that they want Gingrich to do so, and stop drawing the same conservative votes that Santorum needs.

Santorum and Gingrich picked up an overwhelming majority of votes in yesterday's two Southern primaries. But Romney held his ground in the delegate chase by winning caucuses in Hawaii and American Samoa.

Next up is Missouri and its caucuses Saturday. Santorum and Romney have already invested substantial time in the state.

After spending two days in New York raising money, Romney is due in Puerto Rico on Friday.
