Many homes damaged as tornado rips through Michigan

DEXTER, MI (AP) -- A witness says it appears about two-dozen homes are "pretty much unlivable" after a tornado swept through Dexter in southeastern Michigan. Many others are heavily damaged.

Sharon Carty says she and her family heard warning sirens and were in their basement when the twister hit after 5 p.m. Thursday. Their house was untouched but Carty says people whose houses were hit are "pretty stunned."

Video from the scene showed one home that appeared to be flattened while an adjacent home lost most of its roof and second floor. Houses across the street had roof and siding damage. But local emergency officials say they've had no reports of injuries or deaths.

The National Weather Service says there were unconfirmed reports of tornadoes in Monroe County's Ida Township and northwest Lapeer County, near Columbiaville, where trees and power lines were toppled. Winds gusted to 70 miles per hour and there was 2-inch hail.
