Wis. lawmakers pass bill on college board

MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- The Wisconsin Legislature has passed a bill that would rework membership of the Milwaukee Area Technical College board.

The state Assembly passed the bill on a voice vote Friday. It passed in the Senate earlier and now heads to Republican Governor Scott Walker's desk.

The bill would remove all nine members of the MATC board and reorganize it to include five employers. Democrats opposed the bill and called it a power grab. But Republicans stood by it, debating with Democrats off and on throughout the night and into the day.

They passed the bill Friday afternoon without changes. Democrats had originally prepared more than 70 amendments.

The Assembly has been in session for more than 30 hours. It continues to try to pass dozens of bills before lawmakers adjourn the session.
