Germantown caps undefeated season with D1 state title

MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- Germantown closed out an undefeated season in style Saturday night, topping Milwaukee King 72-69 in a hard-fought WIAA Division 1 boys' basketball state championship game in Madison.

Senior guard Zak Showalter scored a game-high 22 points and junior center Luke Fischer added 19 to lead Germantown (28-0) to the school's first title in three state tournament appearances.

Arroyo Edwards scored a team-high 18 points for King, including a basket with nine seconds to play that cut Germantown's lead to 70-69.

But Warhawks guard Josh Mongan made a pair of free throws with 6.9 seconds left to make it 72-69. King, which was seeking its third state title since 2003, had two chances to tie the game on its final possession, but a pair of 3-pointers were both off the mark.
