CARACAS, Venezuela (AP) -- Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez says he has received word of plans for an attack on his leading rival.
Chavez says his government believes that "foreign groups or sectors" have been planning to attack opposition presidential candidate Henrique Capriles.
Chavez said in a telephone call broadcast live on Venezuelan television that his government has offered security to Capriles' team.
The Venezuelan leader made the remark two weeks after gunfire rang out at a political event where Capriles was meeting with residents of a traditionally pro-Chavez neighborhood. One young man was injured in that shooting.
