CLERMONT, Fla. – The UW-Stevens Point softball team dropped a pair of games to Allegheny and Western New England by scores of 7-1 and 4-2 on Monday afternoon.
Scoreless through two and a half innings, Allegheny busted the game open in the third with four runs. The Gators added another three runs in the fifth inning to take the 7-0 lead before UWSP was able to get on the board in the top of the 6th when Jordon Schreiner (Kaukauna, WI/Kaukauna) drove in Sam Raddant (Shawano, WI/Shawano).
Sara Babbitts (Green Bay, WI/Ashwaubenon) threw 4.1 innings, giving up six runs, four earned and scattered seven hits. Michelle Jones (Madison, WI/La Follette) came in for 1.2 innings of relief, allowing just one run on one hit.
In the second game of the day, the Pointers took the early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first and held the lead until Western New England capitalized on UWSP miscues to push two runs across and tie the game at 2-2 in the sixth.
In the seventh, Western New England tallied two more runs to pull in front and the Golden Bears held on for the two-run victory.
Bekah Rennicke (Mequon, WI/Homestead) and Katie Kruger collected four of the Pointers five hits in game two and Krueger drove in the game's only runs for UWSP.
Babbitts threw 5.0 innings for the Pointers, scattering three hits before giving way to Jones, who was charged with the loss, allowing all four runs, two earned, in the loss.
UW-Stevens Point (5-3) returns to action on Tuesday, March 20 with a pair of games against Lawrence and Western Connecticut State. Game times are 1 and 3 p.m. eastern. Live stats will be available for both games.
