Kids Voting USA/Marathon County

WAUSAU (WAOW)--Hundreds of area high school students took part in a mock presidential convention at UW-Marathon County in Wausau. The program is sponsored by Kids Voting USA-WI-Marathon County.

Two conventions take place, one for Republicans another for  Democrats. Students played the role of delegates of more than 20 states.

21 area high schools participated. The agenda called for the student "delegates" to listen to speeches from the presidential candidates, hear them debate, then vote on their party nominees.

It's designed to give students a look at how the political system works.  Mike Otten of Kids Voting-WI/Marathon County said, "It's not so much about aligning yourself with one particular party as it is showing the students what goes into the political process. We hope they leave hear with a better understanding of what it takes to be a leader of tomorrow."
