Iraqi Kurd leader denounces Baghdad 'power grab'

BAGHDAD (AP) -- The president of Iraq's self-rule Kurdish region is lashing out at the central government in Baghdad for what he is calling a power grab that amounts to "ideological terrorism."

In a speech Tuesday, Kurdish Regional Government Massoud Barzani called political agreements between his northern region and Baghdad "meaningless."

The speech marked a sharp deterioration in Iraq's already shaky political system, with Barzani publicly threatening to pull crucial Kurdish support from the coalition government led by Shiite Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki.

Baghdad has been arguing for months with Kurdish leaders over whether Exxon Mobil Corp. should be allowed to develop lucrative oil fields in the north without the central government's approval.
