Grill regulations important as weather warms up

WAUSAU (WAOW)--Warmer weather means more people are heading outside to enjoy it. But officials say they urge people wanting to grill to be careful.

When temperatures heat up, so does the grill. But if you live in an apartment building, keep in mind some extra regulations.

"Safety is going to come first. A lot of people are grilling this time of the year and you're going to want to make sure you're being safe and how to utilize your grill," Jeremy Kopp with the Wausau Fire Department said.

The National Fire Protection Association has guidelines for grilling that Wisconsin adopted. People who live in apartment buildings with at least three units cannot grill on decks or balconies.

"One or two families, it's not controlled, but it's advisable to not have them on the deck," Kopp said.

Those rules say any grilling must be done more than ten feet away from an apartment building. Officials say the penalties range from a warning to fines.

"A good idea is probably to have a fire extinguisher handy," said Weston Fire Chief Steve Meilahn. "That sounds kind of foolish because you're only cooking, but it doesn't take much to get a fire going," Meilahn continued.

You can still cookout and have a good time. Grills can be stored on your deck, but just not used there. When you fire up the grill, officials say just be aware of what's around you.

"Whether it's children playing or a dog tied out on a leash, so that grill can't be tipped over," Kopp said.

Those are rules for apartment buildings. For people who live in a house, you can grill on your deck or balcony. But officials say to still be careful.
