Brian J. McCormick, 50, Wausau died Tuesday March 20, 2012 at New Horizons of North Central Wisconsin, Weston.

Brian was born Oct. 30, 1961 in Topeka, KS, to Dolores (Lane) McCormick and the late Michael J. McCormick.  He attended and received, "his diploma" from Wausau Public Schools Special Education Program.  Brian worked for many years at Northern Valley West Workshop.

He competed in Special Olympics participating in bowling (both singles and doubles), swimming and track and field, winning numerous local and state medals.  Brian was an avid traveler who with family, friends and his Special Olympics family and visited many destinations including Disney World, Washington, D.C., Branson, MO, Indianapolis, California, Hawaii and New Orleans.  Brian was also a member of BSA Samoset Council - Troop #405 earning many badges including the Order of the Arrow.  He enthusiastically participated in the annual Knights of Columbus Tootsie Roll Drive with his brother-in-law Mike.

Brian loved his sports and cheered for the Milwaukee Brewers, Green Bay Packers, Wisconsin Woodchucks and Newman Fighting Cardinals. He enjoyed making latch-hook rugs and even had his big, red Newman Cardinal rug hanging at Newman High School.   Brian was able to help in fund raising efforts for Special Olympics with the help of drivers from State Park Speedway and bowling side by side with many of those racers in their annual event.

Survivors include his mother, Dolores McCormick, Wausau, brother, Kevin McCormick (Sharon) California: sisters, Kelly (Mike) Meverden, Wausau and Michele Hattenhauer, Wilmington, N.C. ; niece and nephews, Patrick Meverden, LaCrosse, Jennifer Meverden, Milwaukee, Grant, Nick and Alex Hattenhauer, and their father Paul Hattenhauer, all of Charlotte, N.C.; aunts, Patty Tank, Park Falls and Eleanor Baumchan, St. Mary's,  KS.

He was preceded in death by his father Michael on Sept, 10, 1990.

Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 12:00 Noon, Saturday March 24, 2012 at the Church of St. Anne.  Rev. Steve Brice will officiate.  Burial will be in St. Joseph's Cemetery, Wausau.   Visitation will be from 10:00 am until the time of service on Saturday at the church. Brainard Funeral Home, Wausau is assisting the family with arrangements.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Special Olympics, North Central Region 2, 2804 Rib Mountain Drive, Wausau or Newman Catholic Schools.
The family would like to thank the staff @ New Horizons of North Central Wisconsin, Jane with Aspirus Comfort Care and Hospice Services, and his kind and caring Special Olympics coaches Sheila and Bill, Donna and Roger and Barb.  Also a special thank you to the teachers with St. Anne Special Needs Religious Education Class.
