Owen-Withee gets by Newman in D5 semifinals

(WAOW) - Owen-Withee used a hot-shooting first half and a late defensive stand to beat Newman Catholic 49-46 in Thursday's division five girls' basketball state semifinals.

The Blackhawks will face the winner of Seneca and Heritage Christian in Saturday's state championship at 11:05 am.

Against Newman, the Blackhawks shot 63 percent in the first half and led by as many as 15 before Newman mounted a big second-half rally.

The Cardinals shot just 22 percent for the game, but used their full-court pressure to create 35 Owen-Withee turnovers and claw back into the game.

Newman took its first lead with just under five minutes to play, but Owen-Withee hit its final four shots to hang on for the win.
