Scores arrested in Vermont Yankee protest

BRATTLEBORO, VT (AP) -- Vermont Gov. Peter Shumlin says he supports the peaceful protesters who gathered at the headquarters of the Vermont Yankee plant to express their frustration that the aging reactor remains open.

Thursday marked the first day of the plant's operation after its initial 40-year operating license expired a day earlier. The Nuclear Regulatory Commission has issued the plant a 20-year license extension, but the state of Vermont wants the plant to close.

A crowd estimated at more than 1,000 marched to the plant's Brattleboro headquarters on Thursday. Activists said 130 were arrested. Police did not have an estimate.

Seven protesters were arrested at the New Orleans headquarters of the plant's owner, Entergy Corp. And The Journal News says five protesters were arrested at Entergy offices in White Plains, N.Y.
