Tomahawk funeral home punished for employing unlicensed director
A funeral home in Tomahawk has been reprimanded by the state for employing an unlicensed funeral director.
The State Funeral Directors Examining Board issued a reprimand Wednesday against Krueger Family Funeral Home and its owner, John Krueger. The unlicensed director, Karen Gauerke, was also disciplined.
According to a state report obtained by Newsline 9, Gauerke worked as a funeral director at Krueger Family Funeral Home from September 2010 until January 2011 without a license. The report said Gauerke "intentionally misled Krueger Family Funeral Home to believe she had a funeral director license." The state also found Gauerke did the same thing while working for a Milwaukee-area funeral home from 2008 to 2010.
Krueger failed to obtain a copy of Gauerke's license for posting, the report said, and the home falsely advertised Gauerke was a funeral director on its website.
According to the report, Krueger discovered Gauerke didn't have a license and reported it to the state. Gauerke later obtained a license in April 2011.
The state has suspended Gauerke for two months as of March 21. She also has to pay a $419 fine.
John Krueger and the Krueger Family Funeral Home must each pay a $209 fine.
Krueger told Newsline 9 Gauerke is currently working as an assistant at the funeral home until the suspension expires. After that, he said, Gauerke will work as a funeral director. Her license expires at the end of 2013, according to the state report.
