Cuban-American pilgrims teary on return to island

EL COBRE, Cuba (AP) -- More than 300 Cuban-Americans and other pilgrims have arrived in Cuba for Pope Benedict XVI's visit.

Some kissed the ground when they arrived at the airport in Santiago, the main city in eastern Cuba.

Others burst into tears before a statue of Cuba's patron, the Virgin of Charity of Cobre, which was found 400 years ago.

The trip is being led by Miami Archbishop Thomas Wenski.

Many in the group have not been back to the island since their families fled more than half a century ago.

Among them is Fabiola Brana, who brought her daughter Astrid. Both said Monday that there were no words to describe their emotion.

The group brought 16,000 rosaries to be distributed throughout Cuba.
