Germany: terror suspect denies al-Qaida membership

Posted:

KOBLENZ, Germany (AP) -- A German-Afghan man whose information prompted terrorism warnings across Europe in 2010 says he had close contact with al-Qaida in Pakistan, but was not a member of the group.

Ahmad Wali Siddiqui, 37, on Monday told the state court in Koblenz -- where he's on trial for terrorist organization membership -- that he stayed in an al-Qaida house near the Afghan border in 2009.

He says the organization bought him a mattress, pillows and food and he met al-Qaida operatives, including a man known as Abu Dujana al-Khurasani -- also known as Humam Khalil Abu-Mulal al-Balawi -- who later killed seven CIA employees.

But he says he never swore an oath of allegiance.

Siddiqui was captured in Afghanistan in July 2010, and told of alleged al-Qaida plots targeting European cities. None materialized.
