Albanian PM rebukes deputy minister over gays

TIRANA, Albania (AP) -- Albania's prime minister has rebuked a cabinet member for saying that people who plan to participate in the country's first gay pride celebration "should be beaten with batons."

Sali Berisha said Monday that Deputy Defense Minister Ekrem Spahiu's remarks were "unacceptable" and "an excess."

Albanian gay rights groups are planning to celebrate the International Day Against Homophobia in Tirana on May 17. The groups have demanded Spahiu be prosecuted under anti-discrimination laws, while the country's ombudsman has urged Spahiu to apologize for his comments last week.

But the small monarchist party Spahiu heads backed him and issued a statement describing homosexuality as a "vice, misfortune and curse."
