Puerto Rico gang members face drug, murder charges

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) -- U.S. agents in Puerto Rico are serving 32 arrest warrants against members of two drug-trafficking gangs accused of several killings including that of a police helicopter co-pilot.

U.S. Attorney Rosa Emilia Rodriguez said that at least 20 people had been arrested as of Wednesday morning. She said the suspects are accused of selling drugs in San Juan public housing complexes. They also are accused of 12 murders and three attempted murders, including the May 2010 shooting of a police helicopter in which a policeman was wounded and the civilian co-pilot was killed.

Police say about 70 percent of Puerto Rico's record 1,117 homicides last year are related to drugs.
