Elections officials want to make databases public

Wisconsin elections officials want to make public databases they generated that have the names but not addresses of people who signed recall petitions targeted Republican Gov. Scott Walker and five others.

Staff of the Government Accountability Board recommended Thursday that the databases be released. The board was to vote on that at its meeting Friday, as well as on certifying recall elections against Walker and the others.

Two databases would be made public. One tracks each petition page and shows whether signatures were counted or rejected. The other contains the names of petition signers and the page and line number, but not the addresses.

Staff says making them public is the right decision given the high public interest in providing access to the databases.
