NORTH CENTRAL WISCONSIN (WAOW)--A highway construction project 23 years in the making moves into its final stretch. The new Highway 10, which will connect Marshfield to Stevens Point, is scheduled to open by the end of August.

It's been in the works since 1989.

After more than seven years of construction, officials say they will begin working on the last section of the highway next month.

Work has already been done on both sides. Now they will finish the 12 mile stretch in the middle. The DOT says it's a $275 million project, that will have benefits for North Central Wisconsin.

"It's going to offer a safer, more efficient route from Marshfield to Stevens Point. It will also help with economic development in that area," WI DOT Operations Manager Matt Bronson said.

Officials say one the new Highway 10 is open, it will take 20 fewer minutes to drive from Marshfield to Stevens Point.
