Pointer softball opens WIAC with two losses

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point softball team opened the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) portion of its schedule Saturday, falling to UW-Eau Claire 9-7 and 10-6 at Gelein Field.

Trailing 2-0 after the first, Kelly Arndt (Ashwaubenon, WI/Ashwaubenon) belted a two-run home run in the second to tie the score at 2-2.

The Pointers took the lead in the third, when Sam Raddant (Shawano, WI/Shawano) reached base and later scored on an error to give UWSP the 3-2 edge.

Eau Claire tied the score at 3-3 in the bottom of the third and added two runs in the fourth to retake the lead, 5-3.

Paige Meulemans (Appleton, WI/Kimberly)'s two-out double in the fifth knotted the score at 5-5 and Maddie Sawdey (Medford, WI/Medford)'s two-run home run in the sixth put the Pointers in front 7-5.

In the seventh, the Blugolds came bounding back, plating four runs including a walk-off game-winning three-run home run from Taylor Pierce to steal game one, 9-7.

Sara Babbitts (Green Bay, WI/Ashwaubenon) suffered the loss, throwing two innings in relief of starter Michelle Jones (Madison, WI/La Follette).

Game two was also a back-and-forth affair, as the Pointers took a 1-0 lead in the first and tacked on another run in the second for the early 2-0 lead.

Eau Claire tied the score at 2-2 in the home half of the second and took a 4-2 lead in the third.

The Pointers tacked on four runs in the fourth to take a 6-4 lead thanks to another home run by Arndt and two RBI single by Meulemans.

Eau Claire responded with a four-run inning in the home half of the fourth and added runs in the fifth and sixth innings to secure the sweep.

Michelle Jones (Madison, WI/La Follette) suffered the loss, throwing four innings, allowing seven runs, all earned, on five hits.

UW-Stevens Point (10-10, 0-2 WIAC) returns to action on Thursday, April 5 with a doubleheader against UW-Whitewater. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m. in Whitewater.
