MILWAUKEE (AP) -- Tom Barrett is asking Democrats seeking the gubernatorial nomination in the governor's recall election to run clean primary campaigns.
Barrett, Milwaukee's mayor, sent a letter Sunday to fellow candidates asking them to take responsibility for negative attacks in the primary, including attacks by independent groups that support them.
Barrett says Democrats must be united in recalling Gov. Scott Walker. The Government Accountability Board ordered a recall election last week.
Barrett signed a pledge Sunday, saying if his campaign committee or any independent groups who support his candidacy spend money on ads mentioning another Democratic gubernatorial candidate by name, he would give money to the charity of that candidate's choice.
Union-backed candidate Kathleen Falk, Secretary of State Doug La Follette and state Sen. Kathleen Vinehout are also running in the primary.
