Ex-governor dies after shooting in Venezuela

CARACAS, Venezuela (AP) -- A former state governor in Venezuela has died more than a week after being wounded in a shooting at a restaurant.

Former Apure state Gov. Jesus Aguilarte underwent multiple surgeries for his wounds after being attacked by a gunman on March 24. He had been hospitalized in Maracay in central Aragua state, where the shooting occurred.

Aragua's governor, Rafael Isea, said in a message on his Twitter account that Aguilarte died on Monday.

Prosecutors say two men have been detained for their alleged involvement in the shooting.

Aguilarte was an ally of President Hugo Chavez but resigned as Apure's governor last year, saying he had health problems. His resignation came after Chavez criticized Aguilarte's performance as governor.
