Militant attacks kill 9 Afghan officers

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) -- Militants in Afghanistan are stepping up their attacks on police.

Authorities say the militants have killed nine officers and abducted 11 others across the nation in the past two days.

The surge in attacks appears to be part of a militant drive to assert their power as NATO forces try to build up the Afghan military with the goal of leaving combat responsibility to local forces by the end of 2014.

In one attack, according to a provincial governor's office, insurgents poisoned the food of police at a checkpoint, and then attacked police there later in the day. Four officers were killed and two were wounded in the attack.

A Taliban spokesman rejects that account, saying fighters attacked the checkpoint and seized weapons, but didn't poison the police.
