Zach Vruwink next mayor of Wisconsin Rapids

WISCONSIN RAPIDS (WAOW)--The new mayor was decided more than four hours after the polls closed. 24-year-old Zach Vruwink will be the city's next leader. And his election was quite unusual.

It was a mayoral election that saw four candidates on the ballot. And in a race that saw more than 45 percent voter turnout, Zach Vruwink was the victor.

"I'm so floored based on the actual vote tally at the end here," Vruwink said.

Some city officials were concerned that because there were four candidates, the vote would end up split. But that wasn't the case. Vruwink took more than 65 percent of the vote.

"When we announced the campaign and other candidates announced and there was no primary, our goal was 50 percent or more," Vruwink said.

Vruwink says his experience as a business owner will help him in his new role as Wisconsin Rapids' leader.

"I believe it's not my age, but my ability. That it's really my ability to lead a community," Vruwink said.

He says all four candidates became close throughout the election. He says that's something that will not change because of the results.

"I love the fact that we've gotten to know each other very well, now is an opportunity to include them in the process," Vruwink said.

"That sincere sense of professional and mutual respect. I don't think that's going to change because of the outcome of the campaign," mayoral candidate James Lucas said.

The other two candidates, Andy Nelson and Dave Walters could not be reached for comment after the results were announced.

"The campaign was a long process. Waiting for the results was just a piece of it," Vruwink said.

Now that the results are in, Vruwink says he's excited to take on new challenges in Wisconsin Rapids.

He is scheduled to take office later this month.
