The Merrill Area Public School District will have new leadership for the next school year.

The MAPS School Board announced Tuesday that it has hired Don Stevens as the interim superintendent for the 2012-2013 school year. The announcement comes after the board previously voted to extend it's search for a permanent replacement.

Stevens has more than 30 years of educational experience, including as a superintendent. He will retire from his current position at CESA 5, where he is currently the agency administrator.

"We are thrilled to name Don Stevens as the interim superintendent for the 2012-13 school year," said Bill Yaeger, school board president. "Don has been working with the district to find a permanent superintendent, and he knows our board, our schools and community as well. It's a great fit."

In addition to his new role, Stevens will continue his role as a consultant to the district to find a permanent superintendent.

Stevens will assume his new role on August 1.
