Waukesha County clerk gives up vote-count duties

Embattled Waukesha County Clerk Kathy Nickolaus has handed off her election duties in the upcoming recalls to her deputy clerk.

Nickolaus came under new scrutiny because of long delays in reporting Tuesday night's election results. She had implemented new procedures after last year's election night fiasco in which she omitted 14,000 votes from unofficial totals. The shortfall made it appear that Supreme Court Justice David Prosser had lost by a couple hundred votes. When the final results were canvassed, he had won by nearly 7,000 statewide.

Waukesha County Executive Dan Vrakas says officials will move swiftly to examine the election night procedures and make changes as necessary to restore confidence.

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports Nickolaus will still oversee other operations in her office, such as marriage licenses.
