Navy jet crashes into Virginia apartments, pilots eject

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (AP) -- Emergency officials say they've accounted for all but three people who lived in a Virginia Beach apartment complex that was hit by a crashing fighter jet.

Virginia Beach Fire Department Capt. Tim Riley said Friday night that crews had done an exhaustive search of about 95 percent of the apartment complex and would continue searching throughout the night.

A fighter jet that malfunctioned just after takeoff from Naval Air Station Oceana hurtled into the apartments, sending flames and black smoke billowing from the rubble.

The two pilots managed to eject just before impact, suffering minor injuries along with five others on the ground.

No fatalities were reported.

Riley said crews don't know if those who are unaccounted for were in the apartment building during the crash.
