APNewsBreak: Mali legislative head to take power

BAMAKO, Mali (AP) -- Mali's embattled coup leader says the process is now under way to make the country's National Assembly president the next head of state.

The move announced late Friday by Capt. Amadou Haya Sanogo comes two weeks after Mali's democratically elected president was ousted, and on the same day that Tuareg separatists in northern Mali declared their independence.

Sanogo made the comments to Associated Press journalists gathered at his office.

The West African regional bloc imposed harsh financial sanctions earlier this week aimed at forcing Sanogo from power.

The coup launched by mutinous soldiers reversed more than two decades of democracy in the deeply impoverished nation. President Amadou Toumani Toure fled amid the coup and remains in hiding.
