STEVENS POINT, Wis. – A two-out two RBI single by Kelly Arndt (Ashwaubenon, WI/Ashwaubenon) in the third inning proved to be the difference as the UW-Stevens Point softball split doubleheader with defending league champion UW-River Falls on Friday afternoon, winning the opener 2-1 and falling in the nightcap 7-3.
UW-River Falls (13-8, 2-2 WIAC) took the early lead, scoring their only run of the opener in the second inning with a pair of doubles off starter Michelle Jones (Madison, WI/La Follette).
Singles by Jordon Schreiner (Kaukauna, WI/Kaukauna) and Katie Krueger (Plover, WI/SPASH) in the third set the table for Arndt, who singled to drive in both runs and give the Pointers the lead.
Jones allowed just three UWRF runners to advance past first base the rest of the way, scattering seven hits and striking out three, earning the win.
In game two, the Falcons jumped out to the 4-0 lead in the opening inning and tacked on two more in the sixth and one in the seventh to cruise to the victory and salvage the split.
Krueger collected three hits in game two and drove in a run while Schreiner and Alicia Hahnemann (Appleton, WI/West) each collected a pair of hits.
Bekah Rennicke (Mequon, WI/Homestead) suffered the loss.
UW-Stevens Point (11-13, 1-5 WIAC) returns to action with a pair of nonconference games at Ripon College on Wednesday, April 11. Game time is set for 3 p.m.
