Pointers drop two against LaCrosse, split season series

STEVENS POINT, Wis. - A day after taking two games from league-leading UW-La Crosse, the eighth-ranked UW-Stevens Point baseball team suffered a pair of defeats on Friday, falling 6-4 in 10 innings and 6-5 to the Eagles to split the season-series at two games apiece.

La Crosse (14-8, 6-2 WIAC) took the early 2-0 lead in the second inning but UW-Stevens Point took one run back in the bottom half of the inning when Jimmy Coady (La Crosse, WI/Aquinas) connected on a two-out pitch and sent his first home run of the season over the right-centerfield fence.

UW-Stevens Point took the lead in the fifth, plating a pair of unearned runs on a Ryan Schilter (West Bend, WI/West) single up the middle, going in front 3-2.

UW-La Crosse retook the lead in the eighth, capitalizing on a UWSP miscue to score a pair of unearned runs and go in front 4-3.

The Pointers battled back to tie the game in the bottom of the ninth, plating the equalizer on a Schilter RBI single.
In the 10th, another pair of unearned runs by the Eagles proved to be enough, as the visitors took the extra-inning contest, 6-4.

Ryan Iverson (Eau Claire, WI/Eau Claire North) suffered the loss, throwing 3.2 innings in relief of starter Brad Stroik (Stevens Point, WI/SPASH). Stroik surrendered two runs, both earned, scattering seven hits and striking out four. Iverson allowed just two hits and four runs, none earned, walking two.

Schilter collected two of the Pointers eight hits and drove in three of the team's four runs in the loss.

The visiting Eagles took a 3-0 lead in the second and never looked back, rushing out to a 5-0 lead after five. Another run in the top of the seventh gave the Eagles a 6-0 lead.

In the home half of the seventh, the UWSP bats finally came alive, as the Pointers capitalized on a UWL error to score three runs and cut the deficit in half, 6-3.

Two runs in the eighth pulled the Pointers within one, 6-5, but the UWL's Justin Scray (Pound, WI/Coleman) allowed just one hit in the ninth to secure the save.

Zach Wendorf (Merrill, WI/Merrill) suffered the loss, allowing four runs, three earned, in 3.2 innings of work. Jacob Herbst (Park Falls, WI/Park Falls) threw 3.2 innings in relief while Kenneth Chiu (Hong Kong/St. Joseph's College) and JP Feyereisen (River Falls, WI/River Falls) also saw action out of the bullpen.

Bryan Clark (Oshkosh, WI/North) collected two of the seven Pointer hits in game two.

UW-Stevens Point (12-6, 5-3 WIAC) returns to action on Monday, April 9 with a pair of nonconference games at St. Norbert College. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
