130 Wis. National Guard troops prep for deployment

OSHKOSH, Wis. (AP) -- About 130 members of the Wisconsin Army National Guard are getting ready to leave for Afghanistan later this month on a convoy-security mission.

It's the fifth time since 1990 that the Oshkosh-based 1157th Transportation Company has been called to active duty. The troops are expected to spend about nine months overseas.

An Oshkosh Northwestern report (http://oshko.sh/IdfERD ) says the soldiers have been training in Mississippi since February. They had a special visitor there, as Brett Favre stopped by for a visit.

Staff Sgt. Katy Werginz says the retired Green Bay Packers quarterback lifted everyone's spirits by signing autographs and posing for photos.

The troops were also given a week of leave, and will report back to camp Monday for final preparations. Then they'll ship out to Afghanistan later this month.
