(WAOW) - It was a chilly day for baseball in central Wisconsin, but several area teams braved the weather to get in conference games.
In Stevens Point, the Panthers got out to a quick start and held off a late rally from Merrill to win the valley opener for both teams, 5-4. In Wausau, DC Everest scored in each of the first two innings and came away with a 6-0 win over Wausau East.
On the softball field, the Evergreens scored five times in the first two innings and ran away with a 15-3 win over the Lumberjacks.
Wisconsin Rapids and Stevens Point opened up the valley season in girls' soccer. The Panthers scored twice in the opening half and added another two goals in the second half to win 4-1.
