Yemen's ex-president insists on role for loyalists

SANAA, Yemen (AP) -- Former Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh says his loyalists must maintain leading roles in running the country's affairs to ensure stability, in a clear warning against attempts by his successor to purge them.

Saleh's statement Thursday underlines his efforts to play an ongoing role in the country months after he handed over power to his deputy, Abed Rabbo Mansour Hadi, as part of a regionally negotiated deal.

The opposition has accused Saleh of trying to undermine Hadi in an attempt to return to power.

Last week, Hadi fired several generals and other former regime figures as part of security agency reforms. The move prompted Saleh loyalists to seize the capital's main airport, disrupting flights for a day.
