Mali politicians detained after coup are freed

BAMAKO, Mali (AP) -- A relative of one of the dozen Malian politicians detained after last month's coup says the officials have been released.

The announcement late Thursday comes hours after junta leaders handed over power to a civilian interim president who now will lead the country for 40 days.

The release was confirmed by Tiegoum Boubeye Maiga, the brother of Mali's foreign minister, who was among those detained. Others being held in custody included the country's ministers of justice and interior.

A group of mutinous soldiers attacked the presidential palace and took control of the national broadcaster in Mali on March 21 angry about the way the government was handling a rebellion by Tuareg fighters in the north of the country
