Kronenwetter PD receives donations to continue K-9 program

KRONENWETTER (WAOW)--The Kronenwetter Police Department is moving forward with its K-9 program.

In March, the department's previous K-9, Chip died from a Blastomycosis infection. He was only three-years-old.

On Tuesday, the village board voted to continue the program, approving $18,000 for a new dog. But the police chief tells Newsline 9 those funds will need to be paid back.

"Unfortunately Chip passed away well before the end of his career, well before what we anticipated to be the end of our program," said Officer Luis Lopes-Serrao, Kronenwetter Police Department.  "We need to continue with that. The need is only getting stronger."

Since Chip passed away the department has received donations. The police chief tells Newsline 9 the department has collected more than half of the money. That money will help police select a K-9 and start training.
