Machinery rolls in for Bring Your Tractor to School Day in Auburndale

AUBURNDALE (WAOW)--Some area students traded in their cars for a different kind of ride. Auburndale High School held its 5th annual ‘Bring Your Tractor to School Day.'

It isn't what you would normally see in a school parking lot. But for Auburndale High School students, it's a ton of fun.

"There's usually a lot of people watching it, because it's Auburndale," Auburndale High School junior Jackie Breuch said.

Breuch's brother started the tradition years ago.

"The torch has been passed from brother to sister," Auburndale High School agriculture teacher Mark Cournoyer said.

But now, the farming fun is in its 5th year. The parade started in the morning, with a stop at Auburndale Elementary School.

"There are kids there, a lot of kids, they're just waiting and all excited," Breuch said.

The tractor drivers sold cookies during lunch, and are using this opportunity to learn more about farming. Teachers at Auburndale say the day of fun has special meaning to those who participate.

"Students show great pride in their agricultural heritage and their background and where they come from," Cournoyer said.

"There are a lot of farmers around, so pretty much you know a farmer, friends with a farmer. They are all around," Breuch said.

Organizers say the annual event helps raise awareness for tractor safety as well.

Students say the money raised during today's event will help send them to the Washington Leadership Conference this summer. Future Farmers of America from all over the country will be there.
