Cuts in salmon stocking proposed for Lake Michigan

BENTON HARBOR, Mich. (AP) -- Michigan fisheries officials say they may make significant cuts in the stocking of Chinook salmon in Lake Michigan for the next few years, and are asking for public comment at a meeting in Benton Harbor. says ( ) that fisheries managers in Michigan, Wisconsin, Illinois and Indiana will set a stocking policy for Lake Michigan salmon and trout by the fall.

The workshop is 1-4:30 p.m. Saturday at Lake Michigan College's Napier Avenue Campus.

Fisheries officials are considering proposals to cut stocking level by up to half because of what they say is a predator-prey imbalance of Chinook and alewives.

Biologists say if too many salmon and trout are in the lake, baitfish decline and salmon starve or fall prey to disease.
