Close cash race in northern Michigan US House race
CRYSTAL FALLS, MI (AP) -
A watchdog group says two candidates who faced off in a northern Michigan congressional district two years ago are in a close campaign financing race this year.
The Michigan Campaign Finance Network released figures Monday on candidates in Michigan U.S. House races.
The group says freshman Republican U.S. Rep. Dan Benishek of Crystal Falls had about $512,000 in campaign money on hand March 31, while Democrat Gary McDowell had $503,000. Benishek beat McDowell in 2010.
The group says Democrat Derek Bailey had $78,000 on hand. Bailey and McDowell are expected to face off in the 1st District primary.
In metropolitan Detroit's redrawn 14th District, U.S. Rep. Gary Peters of Bloomfield Township had $1.2 million, while fellow Democratic incumbent Rep. Hansen Clarke had $564,000.
