STEVENS POINT, Wis. – Justin Jirschele (Clintonville, WI/Clintonville)and Ryan Schilter (West Bend, WI/West) each collected five hits on Saturday afternoon to lead the Pointers to a doubleheader sweep of the Red Hawks of Ripon College by scores of 10-3 and 5-2.
Scoreless through three, the visiting Red Hawks took the early 1-0 lead in the fourth inning off starter Cam Seidl (Appleton, WI/Fox Valley Lutheran).
The Pointers answered in the fifth, plating a pair of runs on a Dan Douglas (East Troy, WI/East Troy) double down the right field line.
In the sixth, the Red Hawks retook the lead with a pair of runs, moving in front 3-2.
In the home-half of the sixth, the Pointers took the lead for good, as Casey Barnes (Mequon, WI/Homestead), Bryan Clark (Oshkosh, WI/North) and Jimmy Coady (La Crosse, WI/Aquinas) all scored to give UWSP the 5-3 lead.
UWSP broke the game open in the eighth, plating five runs on another Douglas two RBI hit, a balk, a wild pitch and a Jirschele sacrifice fly.
Ryan Iverson (Eau Claire, WI/Eau Claire North) shut the door in the ninth, capping the victory and earning his third save of the season. Seidl, who threw six innings of 10-hit baseball, recorded his fourth win of the season after pitching six innings.
Game two proved to be a much closer battle, as the Red Hawks again took a 1-0 lead after the opening frame, but the Pointers responded in the home half of the first, as Jirschele came around to score on a Sean Gerber (Stoughton, WI/Stoughton) single up the middle, knotting the score at 1-1.
Scoreless through the next three and a half innings, the Pointers pushed in front 2-1 in the fifth, as Schilter drove in Coady on a single to centerfield.
Ripon knotted the score in the top of the sixth, but UWSP quickly retook the lead in the home half of the inning as Casey Barnes (Mequon, WI/Homestead)scored on a Douglas groundout, giving the Pointers the 3-2 edge.
UWSP tacked on a pair of insurance runs in the seventh, as Clark double in Jirschele and Gerber scored on a wild pitch later in the inning.
Max Frederick (New London, WI/New London) came on in the eighth and recorded the save, his first of the season, surrendering just two hits. Brad Stroik (Stevens Point, WI/SPASH), who came on in relief of starter JP Feyereisen (River Falls, WI/River Falls), tallied the win, throwing two innings and allowing just one run. Feyereisen threw five innings, surrendering an unearned run and striking out four.
The Pointers (22-8) have now won nine in a row.
UWSP will next be on the road for six straight games. The Pointers travel to UW-Oshkosh for a pair of games on Wednesday, April 25 starting at 1 p.m. before heading to UW-Whitewater for a four-game series with the Warhawks Saturday and Sunday, April 28-29, in Whitewater.
