Study: Number of Marshfield students using alcohol and drugs is down

MARSHFIELD (WAOW) -

A new study shows the number of students using drugs and alcohol in one area school district is going down. But other factors are on the rise.

Compared to last year, Marshfield middle and high school students say they are drinking less alcohol and using fewer prescription drugs.

But school leaders say the fact is, because students are still doing these activities, they still need to be kept informed of the dangers.

The report shows that one out of every three high school students in Marshfield says he or she drank alcohol one month prior to the survey. When it comes to prescription drugs, it's one out of 20. Abuse prevention leaders say that's less than it was last year.

"Those are the two particular subject areas we've been focusing our efforts," AODA Program Manager Dorothy Chaney said.

The number of high schoolers who say they had alcohol in the past 30 days is down almost nine percent. And the same goes for prescription drugs. Those are down by almost half.

"That's something we can't just take for granted. We need to continue to reinforce that with our students," Columbus Catholic Principal Steve Van Whye said.

But the study shows marijuana and tobacco use is holding steady.

"These data sets are just one piece of our community assessment, but they really do keep us in check and guide our work and every year it helps us reassess to see what's working, what's not and where we need to increase our efforts," Chaney said.

Whether it's Columbus Catholic or Marshfield High, school leaders say it's a team effort to educate students on the dangers of early alcohol use.

"I think a big portion is educating parents and letting them know the issues in the community, because kids don't generally tell their parents what age they try alcohol," Van Whye said.

"Educate them, get them on our side and have them help us solve the problem," Marshfield High School Principal Gordon Sisson said.

Educators say they are using these numbers as teaching tools, so that fewer students use drugs and alcohol.

"It's the community implementing multiple sectors with multiple strategies over multiple years," Chaney said.

This was an anonymous survey of 800 total high school and middle school students.
