UWSP softball snaps 10-game skid

STEVENS POINT, Wis. – Michelle Jones (Madison, WI/La Follette) pitched a six-hit shutout in game two and the Pointers scored three runs on nine hits to split a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) doubleheader Monday afternoon at McCarty Memorial Field. The Pointers dropped game one 8-1.

The visiting Eagles took an early 4-0 lead after a half inning in game one and never looked back, plating runs in each of the first three innings to pull away for the victory.

Jordon Schreiner (Kaukauna, WI/Kaukauna) finished the day 2-for-2 and scored the Pointers lone run on a Bekah Rennicke (Mequon, WI/Homestead) RBI single in the first inning.

Sara Babbitts (Green Bay, WI/Ashwaubenon) suffered the loss, surrendering six runs, five earned, in 1.2 innings of work. Jones came on to pitch 5.1 innings in relief, striking out two.

In game two, the Pointers took an early 1-0 lead in the first inning when Maddie Sawdey (Medford, WI/Medford) tripled and scored on a wild pitch.

A Paige Meulemans (Appleton, WI/Kimberly) double in the third drove in another run for the Pointers, who pulled in front 2-0.

Alyssa Trautman (Middleton, WI/Middleton) singled in another run the fifth to extend the Pointers lead to 3-0.

Jones shut the door on the visiting Eagles the rest of the way en route to her ninth victory of the season. She struck out six batters in seven innings of work, scattering six hits.

The win snaps a 10-game losing streak by the Pointers.

UW-Stevens Point (12-22, 2-12 WIAC) returns to action on Wednesday, April 25 with a nonconference doubleheader against St. Norbert College. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
